I appreciate his endorsement, but Senator Gallagher's Senate Bill thanking the President for a job well done was a terrible idea. It failed with one vote for, nine against, and ten abstentions. I would've abstained.
I think I've written about this before, but Berkeley's Republicans keep falling prey to an irritating persecution complex. Tempted by the fun and games of getting on Fox News and having donations pour in, they have a tendency to adopt a siege mentality, and do things not because it's right and proper for Conservatives and the University, but because it'll piss of the Left. Case in point: the BCR meeting where a member announced he was starting a gun club. Why? 'I'm hoping we'll get some publicity from the Leftists,' he said, 'in fact, I'm counting on it.' Maybe he should start a gun club because he likes guns. Angry Clam has written on same, but how many BCR members hoped in their hearts that the Dinesh D'Souza speech would be soundly protested? Too many. It's the Republicans who went to the D'Souza speech solely to hear D'Souza speak who are the future of Conservative campus leadership. Of course, those particular Republicans can do what they like with their money and time. But using the ASUC Senate for it is a waste of student money and time, something you'd think Republicans opposed. Pointless resolutions like the Flag Bill and the G-Dub bill have no effect on students. Not only that, but they legitimize the opposite 'Berkeley Stands Against Racism, War, and Connerly' bills by Leftists. The common sense position is that UC Berkeley doesn't need a foreign policy. In order to provoke controversy and attack Leftists, Gallagher has actually vacated the moral high ground and descended to their level. He can't argue that their resolutions are wastes of time and breath when he's done the same. If these Republicans want to play an eternal game baiting the Leftists and trying to claim Victim status, that's their business. But keep it out of my ASUC. Playing the game there tarnishes both sides at the expense of ordinary students. And guys, I attack you because I love you. Aww. Email This Post! |
