The new Hardboiled is out, with all the hopeless identity confusion and postmodern language games that entails. Are we brown? Yellow? Asian American? Asian American Pacific Islander? Indians count. No, wait, they don't count because 'Indian' itself is a social construct. Plus they're the ones imposing identity on others. And then, holy crap, we've got Pakistanis, Sri Lankins, Bangladeshis, Pilipinos, Indonesians, and everyone else to fit in, too. Kind've weird that it's only a 12 page issue, what with all this to work out.
Somehow Israel and Palestine intrudes, with the dirge-esque recitation of Israeli actions. Not even token attention to countering Palestinian bombers is paid. An article discussing the recent Gujarat violence takes a similar, and odd, one-sided path. The author takes an overview of the Hindu-Muslim conflict, and places every death firmly at the foot of India's governing party. The analysis of American/Extremist-Hindu ties is interesting, as is the way Hindu immigrants use religion to adapt to the USA. But completely ignoring the role of Muslims in the Gujarat attacks is odd at best. Forget if they're at fault; the writer leaves them out entirely. Next is a hit piece attacking the San Quentin learning coordinator for racial cluelessness. Could be fascinating if some context had been provided, or perhaps a chance for the coordinator to respond. The interviews with up-and-coming Asian artists are the best in Berkeley, as usual. Why can't Satellite do stuff like that? Links provided once they're put online. Email This Post! |
