Berdahl has given a news conference on tomorrow's protests.
Signs are starting to come in now that the Administration will be proactive about tomorrow's protests. A source noted that the Administration has plans in the event of any attempts to close a building, and will 'counteract it.' Berdahl's statement falls a bit short of any concrete steps, but it's probably as much as you can do through talking. If you don't feel like reading, here's the important bit: While we can not prevent people from saying ugly and hurtful things, hateful statements, whether anti-Jewish or anti-Arab, are reprehensible. Further, let me make clear that we will not tolerate any action that threatens the physical well-being of anyone. Acts of violence or vandalism or personal attack have no place here and will be treated as criminal actions. What I get from this is 'We aren't gonna stop you from marching, or yelling, or whatever. But we've got a reasonable amount of cops, and more importantly, we know your face and ID number. Push a Jew or slap an Arab and you'll be out of Berkeley faster than you can say 'Junior College.' And that's pretty good. But all football players know that once a scrum has started, you won't get punished for jumping in. And that's what's worrying: a few hotheads with nothing to lose will start a fray, and everyone else has a readymade excuse for why they jumped in. Then a Star of David gets jabbed in someone's eye, a shafiya gets shoved up someone's butt, and Berkeley gets on CNN again. Email This Post! |
