TALK IS CHEAP DEPT:
Sent from Chancellor Berdahl to all group signatories: Berdahl has been sending these little missives a lot lately. With the semi-exception of the Patriot stealings, which vowed to prosecute the perps involved, they're very formulaic. First he spends a sentence or two 'putting everything into context,' by sympathizing with whatever's going around that everybody's pissed off about. Here it's the Middle East. Next the actual incident comes out: most of the time, he balances two against each other so as not to appear playing favorites. If only one incident happened, like in the Horowitz incident, he talks about it in vague 'Values' terms. Finally, Berdahl condemns the whatever happened. Not as anything criminal, but as a bad idea and the wrong path to take. So here's the latest form letter. The inclusion of the Chicano letters is interesting: he's talking about how the Middle East situation is pissing everyone off, but since the only people victimized by it are the Jews, he goes with another Leftist Minority group as kind of Honorary Palestinians. What's missing from these? Oh, right, a plan of action! After all, Berdahl has no interest in criminalizing something mundane like Anthrax attacks or Kristalnacht. So it becomes a 'bad idea' that 'violates values.' If it isn't criminalized, Berdahl doesn't have to institute new policies to deal with it. He can continue with the half-assed 'Let them duke it out' approach to violations of the rights of students. Or does he really think his plea for more civilized discussion is anything but a pathetic subsitute for real action? Hell, I'm just a more or less disinterested observer writing a Blog and even I'm not taking a 'Reasoned, Civil Approach' to this. What hope for Anti-Semites and Latino-haters? Email This Post! |
