Tsunami Relief Coalition Finally Makes Donation
A press release from the folks behind the Tsunami Relief Efforts:
HISTORIC COALITION DONATES $10,284.46 TO TSUNAMI RELIEF
BERKELEY, CA, MARCH 28, 2005: The Tsunami Relief Coalition (TRC), an historic corroboration of over 40 student groups on the Berkeley campus, donated the fruits of their Tsunami Relief Week efforts to UNICEF earmarked for Tsunami Relief. The coalition sent a check for $9,074.46 to UNICEF to be joined by $1,210.00 donation that the coalition had already forwarded to the University of Illinois.

Efforts to continue to raise funds are expected to continue as a benefit concert is still in the works. [CalStuff note: I've been told plans for the benefit concert have in fact been canceled.] Additionally, some conversation has arisen around reconvening the coalition each year until the massive devastation in the effected areas is repaired, an effort that could go on for ten years or more.
My first question is, does anyone know the total cost that went into the Tsunami Relief Coalition's efforts? What was the total for flyers, food, supplies, renting space, and any other expenses? My initial reaction to the TRC was to be wary of trying to do something like this, because the ASUC, by its very nature is a large, cumbersome, beaurocractic, slow-moving, often-times ineffectual organization. Now that isn't always a bad thing, but it just made me think that the ASUC might not be well suited to take a lead role in organizing Tsunami relief efforts, but I guess $10,000 dollars raised over the course of a week isn't that bad.
